Photography by Vicky Pink - On Sunday, October 11, 2015, Houston Style Magazine was on hand in front of the Eldorado Building for a press conference to change the name of Dowling Street to Emancipation Avenue. Community leaders including Senator Rodney Ellis, Representative Sylvester Turner, Houston Area Urban League President Judson Robinson III, NAACP Houston General Council Taft Foley, Next Wave Films and Third Ward resident Preston Middleton, Rev. Jack Yates' granddaughter Jackie Bostic, and Representative Garnet Coleman expressed the need to change the name of Dowling Street – named after Confederate Major Dick Dowling – to Emancipation Avenue. In addition, many community leaders pledged their support including Sylvester Turner, Congresswoman Sheila Jackson, Rick Lowe, Sylvia Brooks and many others. Emancipation Park deserves to have a corresponding street to guide visitors to the park.
