Photography by Vicky Pink - University of Houston-Downtown (UHD) joined the Texas A&M Health Science Center School of Public Health to sponsor the14th Annual Disparities in Health in America: Working Toward Social Justice Summer Workshop. The workshop is a collaborative effort between the Health Disparities Education, Awareness, Research and Training (HDEART) Consortium, an organization of 40 academic and health institutions located in Texas, New Mexico, Louisiana, Florida and Tennessee, with additional member institutions in Nigeria and Mexico. The informative session was opened to students and researchers to provides a comprehensive understanding of health disparities, investigative approaches to enhancing health equity, and offers a biopsychosocial approach toward addressing health disparities in the minority and medically underserved populations. Keynote speakers included Maureen Y. Lichtveld, M.D., M.P.H., Camara Jones, M.D., Ph.D., M.P.H, Stephen L. Klineberg, Ph.D., and representatives from Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and from the Satcher Health Leadership Institute and the Cardiovascular Research Institute of the Morehouse School of Medicine. Moderators included Rep. Garnet Coleman and Dr. Elwyn Lee. Dr. Lovell A. Jones was also in attendance.
