TSU Thurgood Marshall School of Law welcomed back ’16 William H. Rehnquist Award for Judicial Excellence recipient, The Honorable Marc Carter to pay homage to the 14th Amendment, by celebrating the rule of law and discuss how the transformation of American democracy continues to protect & advance rights of all Americans—to commemoration the globally-recognized tradition, Law Day 2017. In August 2016, Judge Carter was named recipient of the William H. Rehnquist Award for Judicial Excellence – one of the highest honors a state court judge in the United States can receive; he was presented the award in November 2016 at the United States Supreme Court during a dinner hosted by Chief Justice of the United States John G. Roberts, Jr. During the past 12 years, Judge Carter has served as judge of Harris County’s 228th Criminal District Court, as well as establishing and presiding over the first Veterans’ Court in the State of Texas. This was also one of the first veterans’ treatment courts in the country. His commitment, compassion and leadership for veteran treatment courts serve as a national model. His integrity, courage, fairness, and decisiveness continue to be essential to the legal system and education of prospective lawyers.
