Photography by Vicky Pink - The Houston Area Urban League (HAUL) celebrated 49 years of providing services to the Greater Houston community with its 2017 Equal Opportunity Day Gala. As the signature fundraiser for HAUL proceeds from the gala benefit the ongoing programs of the organization that serves the Houston community. This year affair was headed by Honorary Chairs, Dr. Carolyn Farb, hc, Philanthropist and Author, and Dr. Rod Paige, Former Secretary of Education; and as Gala Chairs, Marina Coryat and Yolanda Green Barnes. Outstanding honorees were Ms. Sallie Sargent and Ms. Cheryl Cruezot - Marguerite Ross Barnett Leadership Award; Mr. & Mrs. Troi and Kelley Taylor – Gerald Hines Corporate Award; The Houston Astros – Heritage Award; Mr. Ray B. Shackelford – Empowerment Award; and Phillips 66 Black Employee Network - Quentin Mease Community Service Award. Entertainment was provided by Texas Southern University. Some in attendance were HAUL President and CEO Judson Robinson III, Mayor Sylvester Turner, Melanie Lawson, Khambrel Marshal, James Harris, Winell Herron, Cary and Judge Clarease Yates, Francis and Kristyn Page, Jr., Eric Goodie, Elmer Rogers, Dr. Rhea Lawson, Dr. Austin and Loren Lane, Saki Indakwa, Burt Levine, Lisa Valadez, Destany Rainey, Brandon Caldwell, and Reggie Dominique.
