Photography by Jo-Carolyn Goode - Houston was once again splashed with pink and green as the ladies of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. – Alpha Kappa Omega Chapter gear up to celebrate their 90th anniversary. A special luncheon and ceremony was held at Houston City Hall ahead of the 90th anniversary gala. The chapter’s contributions to the city over the years were recognized. Mayor Sylvester Turner and Council members Amanda Edwards and Dwight Boykins treated the ladies to breakfast and lunch. Mayor Turner declared October 16th Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. – Alpha Kappa Omega Chapter Day in the city. Proclamations from Mayor Turner and Council members Edwards, Boykins, and Martha Castex Tatum were presented to the chapter’s leadership. Some in attendance were Marsha Penn, Dr. Mattelia B. Grays, Gwendolyn J. Brinkley, Dr. Polly Sparks Turner, Patricia Roberts, Joyce Jacquet, Cherise Story, Rhonda Keith, Bettye Narcisse, Jackki Wiley, Willie Mae Evans, Dr. Shawn Simmons, Karen Aubrey, Rosa Rush, Pam Lazard, Eugenia Cain, Cheryl Johnson, Mary Barnett, Felicia Wright, Taylor Barnett, Dee Foley, Dorothy Gabriel, Brenda Davis, Dorothy Booker, and Lillie Lacy.
