Tech-or-Treat: 3 Tech Steps Toward a Spookier Halloween

With the Fall air getting cooler and the leaves beginning to change, the most frightening day of the year is just a couple of weeks away. It's time to dust off your ghoulish decorations, put on your best costume and stock up on candy. Roughly two-thirds of the U.S. celebrate Halloween in some way; the National Retail Federation predicts that in 2019, 69 percent of people across the U.S. will hand out candy, 49 percent will decorate their home, 47 percent will dress up and 32 percent will throw a party. Many will also visit haunted houses or local Halloween events.

Longtime UHD Professor of Art Floyd Newsum Receives First Major Retrospective at Madison Museum of Contemporary Art

Professor of Art at the University of Houston-Downtown (UHD) for 47 years and Project Row Houses Co-Founder Floyd Newsum is presenting his first large-scale retrospective, Evolution of Sight, at the Madison Museum of Contemporary Art in Madison, Wisconsin, from May 20 through October 8, 2023. The exhibition is organized by guest curators Dr. Lauren Cross, Gail-Oxford Associate Curator of American Decorative Arts at The Huntington in San Marino, California, and Mark Cervenka, UHD Professor of Art and O’Kane Gallery Director.

Big Brunch, for Children!

Dressed in their Sunday best, Houstonians dined for children at the annual Big Brunch: Building Blocks to the Future – A Celebration of Early Childhood, at the Ballroom at Bayou Place. Hosted by statewide organization CHILDREN AT RISK, nearly 300 guests enjoyed culinary delights created by some of Houston’s best chefs from 1751 Sea and Bar, Ballroom at Bayou Place Catering, Bludorn, Calavera Golfstrommen, Chivos, Frank’s Americana Revival, and Heads & Tails Seafood. Brunch goers chose Heads & Tails Seafood’s shrimp and grits entrée, from chef Roy Burks, as their favorite.
