Harris County Receives Successful Status For Countywide Polling Place Program
Harris County has earned successful status from the Texas Secretary of State’s Office for the Countywide Polling Place Program following the May 4, 2019 Joint Election. Harris County Attorney Menefee Announces Settlement in Volkswagen Lawsuit
Today Harris County Attorney Christian D. Menefee announced the county is set to receive north of $18 million in settlement of its claims over Volkswagen’s emissions-evading technology. The county was the first governmental entity in Texas to sue Volkswagen, giving it a leading role alongside the Texas Attorney General’s office in litigating the case and obtaining a settlement of all claims by governmental entities across the state.
Harris County Seeks Emergency Order From Texas Supreme Court Over Election Law
Harris County filed a motion in the Texas Supreme Court seeking an emergency order to temporarily block Senate Bill 1750—which abolishes the Harris County Elections Administrator’s Office—from going into effect. This filing comes after the Attorney General of Texas appealed a similar order issued by the Travis County District Court yesterday.

Department of Justice to Send Election Observers to Harris County
Today the United States Department of Justice (DOJ) announced that it will be sending federal election observers to Harris County on Election Day. Harris County Attorney Christian D. Menefee had been in ongoing communication with DOJ officials, who reached this decision just a couple of weeks after County Attorney Menefee, Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo, and Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner sent a joint letter requesting DOJ intervention in response to Texas state officials’ statement they would send election inspectors and an Attorney General task force to Harris County to perform “random” checks on election materials.
Harris County Attorney Christian D. Menefee Secures $900,000 Settlement from ITC Due to an Explosion at Its Deer Park Facility
Harris County Attorney Christian D. Menefee settled a lawsuit with Intercontinental Terminals Company (ITC) for $900,000 in connection with the 2019 Deer Park fire. Two years ago, a fire erupted at ITC’s bulk liquid terminal when a tank containing a flammable liquid hydrocarbon mixture caught fire, eventually spreading to additional tanks. The fire created a plume over the entirety of the City of Houston before the fire was extinguished days later. The fire made national news and closed local schools and businesses.

The Texas House of Representatives is in the final stages of passing Senate Bill 1750, which would abolish the Elections Administrator office in only Harris County, and Senate Bill 1933, which would allow for Secretary of State oversight of elections in only Harris County. These bills – which have already been voted out of the Texas Senate – are expected to receive their final vote approval in the Texas House tomorrow.
