HOUSTON - Thousands of excited fans crowded downtown Houston in anticipation for Monday's home opener during Opening Day for the Astros.
The event started with a street festival in downtown Houston that took place from 2 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. as a pre-game to the opener against the Seattle Mariners that night. Minute Maid Park was busy getting ready for the big game as people were filling up outside to take part in the festivities. KHOU 11's Matt Musil shared a video of all the excitement. Inside the stadium, players could be seen warming up. They talked about their anticipation for the game.
Houston Astros legends and Hall of Famers Craig Biggio and Jeff Bagwell threw out and caught the first pitch, respectively. Country music star Clay Walker also sang the national anthem.
Minute Maid Park recently underwent an $18 million dollar renovation on its center field and for other projects. The iconic Tal’s Hill is gone and other renovations include new bars and restaurants, including Torchy’s Tacos and Shake Shack. There are also new souvenir shops, seating areas and a mural painted by local artist Frank Cardona.
