Washington, DC – Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee, a senior member of the House Committees on Judiciary and Homeland Security and Ranking Member of the Judiciary Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism, Homeland Security and Investigations, issued the following statement about the President’s remarks encouraging police to be “rough” with suspects:
“Last Friday, while congratulating police on Long Island for their response to gang violence, the President irresponsibly encouraged officers to be more “rough” when handling suspects in their custody. His remarks rightfully touched off a firestorm of criticism from law enforcement agencies around the country. Today, the White House responded to the criticism by saying the President’s remarks were ‘just a joke.’
“A real President, one who respected his office and acted in a manner that commanded respect, would not joke about national security, terrorism, the disabled, violence and many other topics that are serious in nature. We look to our President to set the moral tone of the country, and to encourage lawfulness, tolerance and kindness. Too many of President Trump’s comments do none of these things.
“Six months into his presidency, it is high time for Trump to stop acting like a joke and start acting presidential. Condoning violence is not funny and the American people are not laughing.”
