Houston, TX – Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee (D-TX), a senior member of the House Committee on Judiciary, released the following statement on the white supremacist attack in Charlottesville, Virginia:

“The acts of hate and violence displayed in Charlottesville, Virginia has no place in America and it must be rejected in the strongest of terms by all true patriotic Americans. Too many Americans of all races and religions have bled and died to bring about an America that lives up to those words in the Declaration of Independence – We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”

“Those responsible for committing this act of terror and killing Heather Heyer and injuring 19 others should be charged to the fullest extent of the law. We cannot allow this type behavior to manifest itself in a country of immigrants and slaves who fought through a Revolutionary War and Civil War to make the words on the Statue of Liberty ring true. “Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free. We must stop this now!”
