Washington, DC – Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee, a senior member of the House Committees on Judiciary and Homeland Security and Ranking Member of the Judiciary Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism, Homeland Security and Investigations, issued the following statement about the President’s remarks thanking Vladimir Putin for the mass expulsion of American diplomats:

“Once again, the President has placed the interests of the Kremlin above those of the United States. Trump’s disgraceful remarks expressing gratitude to Putin for the mass expulsion of American diplomats from Russia are unbefitting of the office he was elected to hold.

“The Commander in Chief is constitutionally bound to serve the interests of the American people. Yet Mr. Trump has time and again shown callous disregard for the oath he took on the steps of the U.S. Capitol.

“Putin’s removal of more than 750 American diplomats may have been a favor to the President, but it was an attack on the United States. It is high time for Trump to start fulfilling his oath to preserve and defend the American people; not his Russian friends.”
