Washington, DC – Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee, a senior member of the House Committees on Judiciary and Homeland Security and Ranking Member of the Judiciary Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism, Homeland Security and Investigations released the following statement about the Secret Service budget crisis due to the President and his family members’ excessive travel:
“According to published reports, more than a thousand Secret Service agents may not be paid for much of the work they have done in protecting President Trump and eighteen members of his family. Excessive travel and a crushing workload are being blamed for creating a budget shortfall within the agency critical for safeguarding America’s leaders.
“As a member of the Homeland Security Committee, I know the brave men and women of the Secret Service, who selflessly place their lives on the line to protect those they are responsible for. It is disgraceful that many of them won’t be paid because of the thoughtless travel to the personal residences of the President and his extended family.
“Advancing America’s interests does not require weekend jaunts to luxury country clubs and private estates. It is unconscionable that because of these excesses, the honorable agents who serve the Secret Service may not be compensated for the risks they assume every day.”
