Washington, DC – Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee, a senior member of the House Committee on Judiciary and its Subcommittee on Immigration and the Committee on Homeland Security and its Subcommittee on Counterterrorism and Intelligence, issued the following statement offering sincere prayers for the missing sailors aboard the USS John S. McCain:
“I am deeply heartbroken over the tragic accident involving the USS John S. McCain, the United States Navy destroyer which collided with an oil tanker just east of Singapore on Monday. The violent impact severely damaged the warship and led to the ongoing search for 10 missing sailors. I pray for their families and for a speedy search and recovery to bring our sailors safely home.
“The accident near Singapore is the latest in a rash of recent incidents involving naval vessels, including a collision two months ago between a container ship and the USS Fitzgerald that killed seven sailors. We have to protect the men and women of the United States military by taking every measure to ensure that their equipment, operational procedures and weaponry are at their best and maximum performance.
“Therefore, I call on the United States Navy to conduct a full-scope review and investigation into the recent accidents, to determine their cause and find ways to prevent them from happening again. The men and women who bravely answer the call to serve deserve nothing less.”
