Washington, DC – Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee, a senior member of the House Committee on Homeland Security and former Chairwoman of the Transportation Security Subcommittee released the following statement about the Trump Administration’s plan to privatize air traffic controllers:
“Air traffic controllers are essential to commercial aviation security and the proposal just announced by the Trump Administration raises serious questions regarding security at our nation’s airports should the road to privatizing air traffic controllers be pursued. This proposal needs to be thoroughly vetted by all relevant Congressional committees including the Homeland Security Committees of both the House and Senate.
“I am concerned that privatization would lead to mass firings and the degradation of the work conditions crucial for maintaining the viability of the air traffic control system. Air traffic controllers have begun to use next generation technology and any private company should surpass what they currently have. I fear the ultimate goal of the President’s plan is to issue a big check to one of his corporate friends.”
