Harris County Attorney Vince Ryan obtained a court order shutting down an unlicensed, after-hours bar known as Insomnia at the corner of Bissonnet Street and the Southwest Freeway.

Judge Elaine Palmer of the 215th District Court of Harris County entered a temporary restraining order closing the bar at 9301 Bissonnet Street and ordering it to remain closed until a valid liquor license is obtained. The bar advertises on social media that it is an after-hours bar, open from 2 a.m. to 6 a.m., which is illegal in Texas.

According to the lawsuit, undercover officers with the Houston Police Department purchased alcohol at the club on May 25, even though the club had no license. There were approximately 150 people with alcoholic drinks at 3 a.m. in the club. All of the patrons were instructed to leave the bar, and officers arrested the bar manager and two bartenders. Law enforcement officers report the bar is notorious for violent crimes, including assaults, drug dealing, weapons disturbances and human trafficking.

The County’s civil lawsuit names the bar owner, the manager and the landowner for maintaining a nuisance. The lawsuit is part of an ongoing initiative by the Brays Oaks Management District, the Harris County Attorney’s Office and the Houston Police Department to improve neighborhoods by filing civil lawsuits against properties that harbor criminal activity.

A hearing is scheduled in the case for 1:30 p.m. on June 23.
