The New York Times best-selling author of ‘The Rap Year Book: The Most Important Rap Song From Every Year Since 1979, Discussed, Debated, and Deconstructed’ and ‘Basketball (and Other Things): A Collection of Questions Asked, Answered, Illustrated’ is set to pen a pilot to an upcoming ABC comedy helmed by ‘Parks And Recreation’ creator Mike Schur. The premise for the single-camera comedy focuses on Serrano’s childhood in San Antonio where his five uncles all had varying perspectives on manhood.
Serrano revealed the news on October 20th via Twitter. “Got tired of waiting for there to be more Mexicans on TV, so I asked @KenTremendous (Schur) to help me try & make a family sitcom for ABC about them,” he wrote, much to the delight of many who have become fans of Serrano’s writing and philanthropic efforts over the years.
Serrano and the ‘FOH Army,’ a 161,000 member (and growing) base of fans who pay it forward, have spent most of their time only raising awareness for Serrano’s recently released basketball book but other fundraising endeavors. This year alone they've such as raising money for Hurricane Harvey relief, Planned Parenthood, Thrive Youth Center in his hometown of San Antonio, and Genesis Women’s Shelter in Dallas where Serrano’s friend and illustrator of both of his books, Arturo Torres spent time with his mother when he was a child. A few years ago, Serrano spent the holidays driving by various fast food restaurants giving $100 to workers to help them enjoy a better Christmas. Last year, he gave one airport employee $3,000 for helping him find his car and has had other efforts where he’s helped donated textbooks and other resources into classrooms across the city.
“I don’t know why you would not want to [give back]. It just makes sense to do that,” the Houston-based Serrano told Latino website Remezcla last month. “Before this, I never had like a platform to do anything, so when I finally got one, it was like, what am I gonna use this for?”
