Washington, DC – Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee, a senior member of the House Committees on Judiciary and Homeland Security and Ranking Member of the Judiciary Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism, Homeland Security and Investigations, released the following statement in response to the mass shooting at Great Mills High School in Great Mills, Maryland:
“Today, we witnessed the nation’s 19th horrific act of gun violence at a school. From current reports, we know that two students are injured and one student, the shooter, is dead at Great Mills High School in southern Maryland. I extend my heartfelt condolences and sympathies to the families and loved ones of the victims. And we send our gratitude and thanks to the first responders and school security who swiftly provided aid and support to those in need.
“As a nation undergoing a gun violence epidemic, we cannot afford to be hesitant in taking action to prevent the easy access to dangerous firearms. As days and weeks pass, the safety of our vulnerable children remains in jeopardy and the deadly consequences that result pile up. We can and must break this tragic cycle of violence. That much and more is owed to the victims of these mass shootings and Americans everywhere demanding action by their government.”
