Texans Training Camp Day 8

As Day 8 of training camp concluded for the Houston Texans, head coach David Culley came to the microphone and said in his opening statement what stood out to him, which is exactly what stood out to most media members in attendance.
“We just finished with a two-minute drill, and although it is the Texans playing each other, if I was on the offensive side of the ball, I'd have felt like we lost the game today,” coach Culley said.
The defense has shined from Day 1 of camp, and I don’t know if it is because of the new scheme, or the presence of new defensive coordinator Lovie Smith. Either way they are looking better and better every day.
Here are a couple more of my takeaways on the day.
Brevin Jordan Is A Red-Zone Machine
Lining up on the offensive side of the ball as a tight end at 6-3- and 245-pound will catch the eyes of the opposing defenses as soon as you take the field. Now add the skill set of a wide receiver and it will have defensive backs making mind boggling decisions on who is going to try and cover you.
That is the case for rookie tight end Brevin Jordan as he has begun to get his timing down and is making the Texans defensive backfield account for his presence.
Where Jordan has seemed to excel is in the red-zone drills where he is finding spots in the end zone and making himself an easy target for his quarterbacks by bullying his way to a spot and making it his. He still has a lot to learn when it comes to playing the tight end position full time, but he could be very viable asset for Houston if they can make continuous trips to the red zone.
Bradley Roby Vs Nico Collins Is A Must See
Long time college football fans know that the rivalry between Ohio State and Michigan is about as real as they come. It is almost like the Hatfield’s against the McCoy’s. Now I wouldn’t say that the battle between eight-year veteran defensive back Bradley Roby (Ohio State) and rookie wide receiver Nico Collins (Michigan) has made it to that level yet, but their battles are starting to become epic.
The two can be seen battling and talking to one another after a play, even if one gets the advantage over the other. Roby knows that what he is doing will help Collins grow throughout the season.
“I think he's going to be a good receiver,” said Roby. “He's tall, big, uses his body well, can go up and get the ball. So, I just want to keep motivating him and keep working with him and try to pick and choose where I can really go against him and see how he runs his routes and help him if possible. So, I look forward to helping him mature.”
Making An Impression
Offensive lineman Jordan Steckler was the first off-season transaction that first-year general manager Nick Caserio made once he was hired. Having had first-hand knowledge of Steckler’s skill set from his time in New England, which is Caserio’s former team, he was brought in to add depth to an offensive position that will be very vital to the Texans this season.
The former teammate of offensive lineman Max Scharping at Northern Illinois is starting to gain some attention from new offensive line coach James Campen. During 11-on-11 drills, Steckler dominated every defensive lineman that lined up in front of him. He will definitely be a viable replacement if one of the starters get injured or underperforming.
