Major League Baseball announced the 2021 All-Star Game reserves on Sunday and once again the hometown team will be well represented in Denver on Tuesday July 13, 2021.
Carlos Correa (shortstop), Jose Altuve (second base), Ryan Pressly (reliever) and Michael Brantley (outfield) was selected to play for the American League.
Reserves for both the American League and National League squads were determined through a combination of Player Ballot choices and selections made by Major League Baseball. Altuve, Brantley and Correa were selected via the Player Ballot, while Pressly was an MLB selection.
“This never gets old, it is always an honor to be named an All-Star,” said Carlos Correa who is making his second All-Star appearance. “I’ve been able to bounce back to play healthy in 2020 and 2021 and get back to the All-Star team. This really means a lot to me. I’ve spent a lot of hard work, focus and dedication. I just want to thank the people who voted for me throughout the whole process. Houston and Puerto Rico, thank you guys so much.”
There will be a familiar middle infield for Astros fans as Correa will have one of his best friends and teammate in second baseman Jose Altuve who was selected to his seventh All-Star Game which ties the club record which was set by Hall of Fame second baseman Craig Biggio.
“As a kid, I dreamed about playing in the big league and going to All-Star Games,” Altuve said. “Then I came here and made the dream come true. I feel happy. I feel really happy. I couldn’t make this happen without the help of my teammates.”
Outfielder Michael Brantley who is leading all MLB with a .340 batting average found out that he made his fifth All-Star team in Cleveland, the city where he started his career.
“It always goes appreciated. It’s a lot of hard work,” Brantley responded when asked about his excitement for being voted onto the team. “Not only for myself, but for my teammates and everybody who helps you along the way to put up the stats, you never do it by yourself.”
Reliever Ryan Pressly has been the one constant that manager Dusty Baker can depend on out of the bullpen and his hard work was rewarded with an All-Star selection. He has only allowed five hits in his last 12 appearances and only one run has scored during that duration as well.
“I don’t think I could’ve done it without my teammates,” said Pressly who has a 1.54 ERA on the season. “Those guys are sacrificing their bodies for me in the ninth inning. A lot of my thanks goes out to them and their preparation behind me is unbelievable. I’m humbled and honored.”
The Astros are the only club in the Majors with four or more All-Star selections in each of the last four seasons.
