After a full offseason of uncertainty, and things becoming a little weird on Sunday when the Texans veterans showed up to camp, there was a Deshaun Watson sighting on the first day of training camp. The Texans first-round draft pick in the 2017 NFL Draft participated in quarterback drills but took no reps with the first or second team units during practice.
“From our perspective it is a day-to-day endeavor,” said first-year general manager Nick Caserio to the media about the Watson situation. “We are going to take it one day at a time and we are going to ultimately do what is best for the Houston Texans.
“I’m sure there has been some speculation as to what the Texans will do, a lot of different scenarios. Quite frankly, I mean, a lot of it is speculation. I’m not going to comment on a bunch of rumors, what we’ve done, what we’re going to do, what the plan is. That’s not what I’m going to do. That’s not my responsibility. The reason I was brought here by the McNair family was to do what I feel is best for the Houston Texans organization on a day-to-day basis, and that’s my responsibility to ownership and that’s my responsibility to players and that’s my responsibility to the coaching staff. So, that’s how we’re going to handle it.”
Watson went unnoticed until the quarterbacks started their drills and he put on his red number 4 jersey. The media began to chatter amongst each other as all were startled that he would participate in team activities as he has not wavered on his stance he has had since January that he wants to be traded.
Free agent quarterback Tyrod Taylor took first team reps with Watson standing behind him watching and not speaking to any of the offensive players besides some pleasantries. At one point he could be seen running scout team defense when the offensive lineman and quarterbacks moved to another field to go over some of the offensive scheme.
Although Watson had all eyes on him from a media standpoint, first-year head coach David Culley said that having him on the field was not a distraction at all.
“It was just business as usual with everyone here,” Culley said. “He has not been a distraction at all. He's been very professional about everything, just like all the guys have been here. Deshaun is a Texan and he is here, everybody that is under contract is here.”
Watson was not made available to the media after practice and his teammates declined to speak on any situations involving him.
The Texans will resume camp on Tuesday.
