I am of the belief that nothing is more important to a person than their birthday. It is a day an individual cherishes because they have seen another year of life and if we are being honest with ourselves, we love the gifts.
On Tuesday, Houston Astros manager got one of the best gifts he could have received on his 72nd birthday at Minute Maid Park and that was a 6-3 extra innings win over the Texas Rangers that came courtesy of a 10th inning grand slam from second baseman Jose Altuve.
It was the Astros first grand slam since Aug. 16, 2011, when Brian Bogusevic blasted a homer off of Carlos Marmol in a win over the Cubs.
“You want to win on his birthday,” Altuve said. “So, I ‘m happy that I did something to help make that happen.”
The former American League MVP sent an 0-1 pitch from Rangers reliever Demarcus Evans into the Crawford Boxes in left field to complete a breathtaking final two innings for Houston as they improved their record to 38-28 on the season.
Baker almost had his party ruined as the Rangers took a 2-1 lead into the bottom of the ninth inning, but another “Party Animal” was determined to get one more dance in before it was over.
Shortstop Carlos Correa hit a powerful home run into right field after being down to his final strike at-bat with two outs to tie the score a two eventually sending the game into extra innings.
“Carlos, it feels like every time he gets an opportunity to capitalize on big moments, he does it,” said starting pitcher Lance McCullers, who was making his first start since May 23 after being out with a shoulder injury. “I can’t say enough how well Carlos has been swinging the bat and playing overall. This whole season, but definitely here of late. It has been special to watch.”
Tuesday night will be a game manager Dusty Baker won’t forget, especially since he mentioned that he did not have a great managerial record on games played on his birthday.
"The people went home happy, we went home happy, I certainly went home happy because my record on my birthday is terrible,” Baker said. “The first thing Altuve said to me was, ‘Happy birthday, Skip,' and that certainly was a happy birthday."
