Texans Must Contain Rams Disruptor Aaron Donald

If the saying, “Life comes at you fast” was a team in the NFL, it would be the Houston Texans.
One week after facing the Arizona Cardinals, Houston's next opponent, the Los Angeles Rams are just as dangerous on both sides of the ball. The Texans' 31-5 defeat to Arizona revealed that Houston's inefficiency to move the ball and sustain drives is a huge problem that will not get fixed this week against Los Angeles.
The Rams defense led by three-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year Aaron Donald has caused major chaos for offenses this season. With Donald getting so much pressure into the backfield, it makes quarterbacks adjust and forces them to make some throws out of desperation which is usually beneficial for the Rams defensive backs.
Texans’ offensive coordinator Tim Kelly knows his rookie quarterback is in for a long day trying to help his offensive lineman figure out a way to stop Donald.
“It’s not like he’s (Aaron Donald) going to take it easy on a rookie,” said Kelly during his weekly press conference.
Kelly also elaborated on how the entire offensive line must acknowledge where Donald is during the game. If not, he will create havoc for them and not allow them to get into any rhythm.
“He’s as disruptive of a player as we’ve seen,” Kelly said. “They do a really good job of moving him around so you can’t pinpoint exactly where he is going to be on every play. You’re expecting him to be in a certain spot and if he’s not, what are you going to do to prevent him from making a game-wrecking play. On every snap, he’s got the ability to do that.”
With the departure of running back Mark Ingram via trade to the New Orleans Saints. The Texans will now depend heavily on running back David Johnson. He will also have to account for Donald’s whereabouts if Houston plans on trying to improve their lowly average of 3.3 yards per carry, which ranks them at the bottom of the NFL rankings.
“Get as many bodies on him [Donald] as possible, get as many guys blocking him as possible,” Johnson said. “He’s a disruptor, for sure. He’s so fast. He’s shorter, so he’s quicker, and his center of gravity is good. I think the biggest thing is just trying to get as many guys blocking him, or in front of him, or disrupting him, trying to confuse him as much as possible.”
