Prairie View A&M (1-1) will square off against an unfamiliar foe in their home opener when they face Houston Baptist University (0-2) on Saturday in their home opener at Panther Stadium.

It will be the first time both teams have met since HBU began its football program in 2013. The Panthers will be looking to rebound from a 40-9 defeat they suffered against University of the Incarnate Word on last Saturday.

“We knew it was going to be a challenge, but I thought our guys were well prepared and ready to play,” said PVAMU head coach Eric Dooley at his weekly press conference. “We just turned the football over too much. You can’t have that may turnovers and expect to be successful against a good football team.”

Quarterback Jawon Pass, who transferred to Prairie View from Louisville, did not look like the player who had won SWAC Newcomer of the Week honors a week prior for his performance against Texas Southern. Although he completed 50 percent of his passes for the game, it was his three interceptions that helped Incarnate Word put the game out of reach as they lead 40-0 by the end of the third quarter.

Prairie View will look to eliminate a lot of the mistakes that plagued them on last week against the Cardinals when they face the Huskies on Saturday, who are also coming off a 45-13 loss to Northern Colorado.

HBU is led by sophomore quarterback Blaine Bentsen who has thrown for over 400 yards and two touchdowns on the season. His two favorite targets, Charles King and Branden Walker have combined for 242 yards in two games played this season. Coach Dooley believes that the Huskies will watch the game film from last week and try mimic putting the ball in the air against the Panthers.

“What they (Incarnate Word) did to us, you can rest assure that Houston Baptist is going to try to do as well,” coach Dooley said. “We are excited to face another challenging opponent and we will be up for the challenge.”
