DALLAS -- Prairie View A&M University (3-1) football team extended their State Fair Classic winning streak to four as they beat Grambling State 24-10 (1-3) at the Cotton Bowl Stadium.
“It was a feeling of we have been here before,” said defensive lineman Jason Dumas who remained undefeated against Grambling in his time at PV. “We know it was a major accomplishment.”
The Panthers were led by quarterback Jawon Pass who drove the Panthers down the field with a 75-yard drive that ended with a 13-yard touchdown pass to tight end Donovan White. Both teams would have offensive possessions that failed to yield points as Prairie View held a 7-0 lead until late in the first quarter when kicker Luis Reyes hit a 26-yard field goal to put the Panthers up 10-0.
That score was set up by a turnover created by defensive back Logan Jackson who recorded his second interception in consecutive weeks that put points on the board for PV. A week prior, it was Jackson’s interception return for a touchdown against Houston Baptist that helped win the game.
After a slow start, Grambling would begin to gain some offensive energy at the end of the first half and would use that momentum to finally get on the scoreboard when running back CJ Russell found the end zone on a two-yard run. That cut the lead to 10-7 as both teams headed into the locker room.
Prairie View’s defense set the tone early in the second half forcing the Tigers to a three and out on their first possession of the half. The Panthers offense would use that momentum created by the defense to take a 17-7 lead after running back Jaden Stewart scampered for a 17-yard touchdown run.
That 10-point advantage lasted for almost the entire quarter before PV turned the ball over at their own 12-yard line. The Tigers would convert the mistake into points when kicker Garrett Urban’s 29-yard field goal cleared through the uprights with 1:14 left in the third quarter to bring GSU within seven points of the Panthers.
Unfortunately, that would be as close as they would get as Prairie View used another 75-yard drive early in the fourth quarter that was capped off by a 36-yard touchdown catch from Jailon Howard to increase the lead to 24-10, which ultimately was the final score.
"We played a very good Prairie View A&M football team today and my hat goes out to coach (Eric) Dooley and his staff,” said Grambling head coach Broderick Fobbs.
PVAMU will not have a long time to celebrate the conference win as they have a short week with an upcoming game against Arkansas Pine Bluff on Thursday night at Panther Stadium.
