Astros End Four-Game Losing Streak In Walk-Off Fashion

On Tuesday night, the Houston Astros looked as though they were still trying to get adjusted to playing a game on central standard time. After spending over a week on the west coast, Houston was finally back at Minute Maid Park in front of a crowd of 32, 297 fans.
The Astros didn’t give them anything to cheer for in the first five innings of the game, but the fans never stopped rooting on the home team and that paid off in the end as Houston defeated the Tampa Bay Rays by a score of 4-3 when pinch-hitter Jason Castro earned bases-loaded walk-off Rays reliever JT Chargois.
“We certainly didn’t need to lose another one,” said Astros manager Dusty Baker. “We were playing a quality team. These guys, rise to the occasion. I’m glad we were home and glad we had the energy from the fans. I had to remove myself from being a fan. That was a good game to watch; good game to play.”
Houston looked like they were on their way to their fifth consecutive loss, as Rays pitcher Michael Wacha didn’t allow a hit in five innings, and he only needed 61 pitches to shut down one of Major League Baseball’s best offensive lineups.
“I felt good,” Wacha said after the game about his outing. “I was just trying to go out there and attack these guys, get ahead, and be able to put them away.”
Tampa Bay carried a 2-0 lead into the sixth inning, thanks to a two-run home run from Yandy Diaz off Houston starter Jose Urquidy in the top of the first inning. The Astros were finally able to get on the board when Alex Bregman hit a 395-foot blast into left-center field off reliever Andrew Kittredge.
Houston would strike again in the bottom of the eighth inning when Jose Altuve hit his 31st homer of the season, which tied the most in his career in a single season to tie the game, but that all changed when Randy Arozerena hit a solo home run in the top of the ninth inning to put Tampa Bay back in the lead.
Trailing by one run in the bottom of the ninth inning, Houston got two very good hustle plays by Yordan Alvarez and Carlos Correa who both beat out infield hits to put the Astros in position to win the game. Tampa Bay intentionally walked Aledmys Diaz to load the bases and brought in JT Chargois to relieve Josh Flemmings.
Chargois ran into some early trouble with Chas McCormick and eventually walked him, bringing the tying run across the plate. Dusty Baker would pinch hit for Martiń Maldonado with backup catcher Jason Castro who drew another walk to win the game.
“I just wanted to go up there and not do too much,” said Castro who was familiar with Chargois from their time in Minnesota together. “I knew he was probably having a little bit of some command issues, but at the same time, that might be the opportunity where he tries to get the ball in the strike zone. I tried to stay within myself and tried not to get too overexcited and chase.”
With the win on Tuesday night, the Astros magic number to clinch the A.L. West is one.
