On Tuesday, Prairie View A&M University announced they had hired Leonard “Bubba” McDowell as its new head football coach.

“I’m proud to have Coach McDowell as our new head of the football program,” said PVAMU Athletic Director, Donald Reed. “I chose Coach McDowell because of his vast and successful experiences in collegiate and professional football. His leadership style and student-athlete-centered approach align with our goals to see our athletes excel in the classroom, on the field, and in the community. I’m impressed by Coach McDowell’s commitment to PV, and I know he’ll lead us to accomplish great things.”

McDowell, 55, was selected by the Houston Oilers in the third round of the 1989 NFL Draft. He spent six seasons with the Oilers before finishing his career with the Carolina Panthers in 1995. After his playing days were done, the former Miami Hurricane turned to coaching in the college ranks, spending four seasons with Texas Southern University.

Once he left TSU, McDowell was hired by the University of Houston to coach the safeties for the next two years before heading to Prairie View A&M. He served as the assistant head coach for the past eight seasons while also leading the development of the defensive unit over the past three seasons. McDowell had served as interim head coach after the departure of Eric Dooley, who Southern University hired in December.

The Panthers are coming off of one of their best seasons in the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC), winning the Western Division with a 6-2 conference record and earning a trip to the SWAC Championship Game against Jackson State University.
