The 2022 Home Run Derby takes place during the All-Star break, and the Houston Astros designated hitter Yordan Alvarez, who was also named MLB Player of the Month for June, may be the only representative for Houston.

Since the event will take place in Los Angeles, most Houston fans will not be in attendance to watch some of the best sluggers from around the league hit massive shots out of the ballpark.

On Saturday, the Astros decided to treat their fans to their own private home run derby by hitting five homers en route to a 9-1 blowout of the Los Angeles Angels.

Houston jumped out to an early 3-0 first-inning lead on the Angels and nearly batted around in the inning against Los Angeles starter Patrick Sandoval sending eight batters to the plate. That lead would increase the next inning when Astros catcher Martín Maldonado sent a solo shot over the train tracks in Minute Maid Park.

“He’s been hitting the ball good for the last couple of weeks, almost a month,” said Astros manager Dusty Baker. “He didn’t miss a couple of pitches. He was on them, and he squared them up, and when you square them up, good things can happen.”

Maldonado would strike again in the bottom of the sixth inning when he launched an Andrew Wantz four-seam-fastball 429-feet to centerfield to give him the fourth multi-homer game of his career. Even though hitting two home runs in a game was impressive, it was where the second home run landed that made teammate Jose Altuve jealous.

“Maldonado made me look bad right there, hitting the ball straight center,” said Altuve, who followed up Maldonado’s home run with one of his own. “Not too many guys can go straight center.”

Outfielders Chas McCormick and Kyle Tucker would join in on the home run fun by hitting solo home runs in the very next inning to help Houston secure the win and help pitcher Jose Urquidi get his seventh victory on the season.

The right-hander pitched six innings allowing only one run and two hits while striking out eight Angels batters. He was asked how he has been able to dominate in his last 19 innings where opponents have only scored three runs on him.

“I keep the same focus,” Urquidi said. “Nothing special, just use my strengths with all my pitches with all my stuff and believe in my plan.”

Houston will wrap up their three-game home series against Los Angeles on Sunday as Framber Valdez will take the mound for the Astros.
