It's finally time for Angela Bassett to receive a well-deserved Oscar statuette of her own. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) announced on Monday that the two-time nominee will be honored with an honorary Oscar at the 2023 Governors Awards.

Bassett made history in 2023 when she received a nomination for Best Supporting Actress for her powerful portrayal of Queen Ramonda in the 2022 sequel "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever." This nomination marked her as the first person of color, the first woman, and the first Marvel Studios actor to be recognized for a performance in a comic book adaptation.

Her initial Oscar nomination came in the mid-90s for her outstanding portrayal of the late rock and soul icon Tina Turner in the 1993 biopic "What's Love Got to Do With It?" Throughout her illustrious career, Bassett has consistently delivered remarkable performances that have set new standards in acting.

Janet Yang, the president of the Academy, expressed admiration for Bassett's decades-long contribution to the industry, stating, "Across her decades-long career, Angela Bassett has continued to deliver transcendent performances that set new standards in acting."

In addition to her memorable role in "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever," Bassett has graced the screen in numerous iconic films such as "Boyz n the Hood," "How Stella Got Her Groove Back," "Malcolm X," and "Mission Impossible: Fallout." She has also portrayed Queen Ramonda in three Marvel films. Her television career has been equally impressive, with appearances in notable shows like "American Horror Story," "ER," and "9-1-1," among others.

Honorary Oscars are awarded to a select group of individuals, chosen by the Academy's Board of Governors, to recognize extraordinary distinction and exceptional contributions to the film industry. Alongside Angela Bassett, Mel Brooks and Carol Littleton are also set to receive the 2023 Governors Award, while Michelle Statter of the Sundance Institute will be honored with the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award.

The 2023 Governors Awards will take place in Los Angeles on November 18, where Bassett will finally receive the recognition she truly deserves.
