Amidst the bustling energy of Austin, Texas, the Public Utility Commission of Texas stands poised to honor the unsung heroes of the electric industry on National Line Worker Appreciation Day. Today, we pay tribute to the courageous men and women who dedicate their lives to ensuring reliable electricity and safeguarding public safety, often amidst perilous conditions. With Texas boasting the largest number of utility line workers in the nation, totaling nearly 14,000 individuals, the importance of their invaluable contributions cannot be overstated.
"Line workers are the backbone of our electric infrastructure, serving as the first responders in times of need and tirelessly laboring to keep our communities powered," remarked Thomas Gleeson, Chairman of the Public Utility Commission of Texas. "Their unwavering commitment and dedication to duty, often working with high voltage electricity, exemplify the true essence of public service. Today, we extend our heartfelt gratitude to these brave individuals for their indispensable service to the people of Texas."
From installing and maintaining transmission wires to responding to natural disasters, the role of line workers is paramount in ensuring uninterrupted power supply to homes and businesses across the state. Yet, their job is not without its perils, as highlighted by statistics indicating that working as a line worker ranks among the 20 most dangerous occupations in America. Despite the inherent risks, these skilled professionals continue to uphold the highest standards of excellence, showcasing unwavering resilience and determination in the face of adversity.
Designated by the U.S. Senate through Resolution 95 in 2013, April 18th marks National Lineman Appreciation Day, a fitting occasion to recognize and celebrate the dedication and sacrifices of these unsung heroes. In Texas, the Texas Lineman's Rodeo Association (TLRA) serves as a beacon of support and solidarity for line workers, providing opportunities for education, innovation, and the promotion of electrical safety. Through events like the Texas Lineman's Rodeo, the TLRA proudly showcases the skill and pride of the high voltage linework profession, further underscoring the invaluable contributions of these remarkable individuals.
As we commemorate National Line Worker Appreciation Day, let us pause to express our profound gratitude to the brave men and women who stand at the forefront of our electric infrastructure, ensuring that the lights remain on and our communities thrive. Their unwavering dedication and selfless service embody the true spirit of Texas, and for that, we salute them.
