Mark your calendars! Tyler Perry’s highly anticipated historical drama, *Six Triple Eight*, is set to premiere on Netflix on December 20, 2024. The film, which Perry wrote, directed, and produced, sheds light on the remarkable yet often overlooked story of the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion. This groundbreaking battalion, composed of Black women and women of Caribbean and Mexican descent, was the only Women’s Army Corps unit of color to serve overseas during World War II.

The film draws inspiration from Kevin M. Hymel’s article “Fighting A Two-Front War” in WWII History Magazine. In February 1945, these courageous women were deployed to England and later to France, where they faced the daunting task of clearing a backlog of 17 million pieces of mail. Their mission was critical, reconnecting soldiers on the front lines with their families back home and boosting morale. Despite being given six months to complete the task, they accomplished it in under 90 days, working tirelessly in challenging conditions.

Under the leadership of Major Charity Adams, portrayed by Kerry Washington, the women of the 6888th lived by the motto “No Mail, Low Morale,” highlighting the vital role their work played in maintaining soldier morale. As of 2024, only two members of this heroic battalion remain: Fannie McClendon and Anna Mae Robertson. In recognition of their extraordinary service, President Joe Biden awarded them the Congressional Gold Medal.
