JSU Art Students Shine in Real-World Collaboration with Visit JXN for JXN Restaurant Rebranding!

Exciting news from Jackson State University (JSU) and Visit Jackson as they team up to empower local restaurants in Jackson, Mississippi, through a dynamic collaboration with JSU’s Department of Art. At a recent press conference on March 1, three talented JSU graphic design students unveiled their stunning work—new logos, signage, and marketing materials—for three beloved "City with Soul" restaurants.

Mark Geil, interim chair for JSU's Department of Art, emphasized the significance of this real-world experience for the students. "It's vital for graphic design students to have tangible examples of their work in the world. This collaboration offers invaluable experience and showcases their immense talent," said Geil.

The opportunity arose thanks to JSU alumnus Reshonda Perryman, director of branding and creative engagement for Visit Jackson, who introduced the project to JSU students. Perryman, a former adjunct professor at JSU, aimed to provide students with hands-on experience while uplifting local eateries.

Selected from a pool of proposals, Ashanti Stiff, Tyler Tremble, and Michael Brown stepped up to the challenge. Stiff crafted branding for Sugar’s Place, Tremble for Bully’s Soul Food Restaurant, and Brown for Taste of the Island.

Reflecting on his experience, Brown expressed pride in his journey. "Designing for a restaurant was an unexpected opportunity. It was a fulfilling journey, and I learned so much," said Brown.

Stiff, a Jackson native, echoed the sentiment, highlighting the importance of real-world experience in graphic design. "Having tangible projects like this sets us apart and showcases our skills," said Stiff.

Each student collaborated closely with restaurant owners, translating ideas into captivating visuals. Glenda Barner, owner of Sugar’s Place, expressed gratitude for the collaboration, emphasizing the significance of uplifting youth in the community.

This ongoing partnership, sponsored by Visit Jackson, promises to inject fresh creativity into Jackson's culinary landscape. Tyler Tremble, originally interested in veterinary studies, found his passion in graphic design. "Now, I have a tangible piece for my portfolio. It's incredibly rewarding," said Tremble.

Geil, bursting with pride for his students, remarked, "This experience will shape their careers and leave a lasting impact. It's a testament to their talent and dedication."
