Houston is set to join the world in celebrating the life and enduring legacy of President Jimmy Carter, a man whose dedication to service opened countless doors—both figuratively and literally—for communities around the globe. In a heartfelt memorial event, Houston Habitat for Humanity, in partnership with Mayor John Whitmire, will honor the former President’s nearly four decades of contributions to Habitat for Humanity.

A Wall of Opportunity in Downtown Houston

On January 7, 2025, the Barbara Bush Literacy Plaza at the Houston Public Library will transform into a space of tribute and inspiration. Houston Habitat will erect a symbolic wall featuring a door—a nod to the opportunities President Carter created for families in need through his unwavering commitment to affordable housing. This wall will stand as a beacon of hope and gratitude, inviting Houstonians to leave their personal tributes by signing the wall or the door with their names or heartfelt messages.

A Legacy of Service and Humanity

Few individuals have embodied the spirit of selflessness like President Carter. Through his hands-on involvement with Habitat for Humanity, he not only built homes but also fostered a sense of community and dignity for countless families. From wielding a hammer at construction sites to advocating for affordable housing policies, Carter exemplified what it means to lead with purpose and compassion.

Allison Hay, CEO of Houston Habitat for Humanity, reflects, “President Carter’s legacy is one of love and dedication. He believed in the power of homeownership to change lives, and we are honored to celebrate his incredible contributions.”

A Community United

The memorial event, which will kick off with a special ceremony featuring Mayor John Whitmire, Houston Habitat CEO Allison Hay, Big Brothers Big Sisters Lone Star CEO Pierce Bush, and Habitat homeowner Cindy Ramos, is expected to draw attendees from across Houston. The event will take place from 11 a.m. to noon on January 7, with the memorial open for public viewing and signing from noon to 6 p.m. that day, and from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on January 8 and 9.

Mayor John Whitmire shared, “President Carter’s work with Habitat for Humanity reminds us all of the power of service and the importance of lifting others. This tribute is a small but meaningful way for our city to say thank you for his extraordinary contributions.”

Honoring Through Action

This memorial is not just a reflection on the past—it’s a call to action. Houstonians are encouraged to honor President Carter’s legacy by getting involved with Habitat for Humanity, whether through volunteering, donating, or advocating for affordable housing.

As Houston joins the global Habitat community in this celebration of life, the city continues to carry forward President Carter’s vision of a world where everyone has a decent place to live.

For those who cannot attend in person, Houston Habitat for Humanity invites you to share your messages of tribute online at www.houstonhabitat.org.

Let’s come together, Houston, to celebrate a man whose life was a testament to kindness, humility, and the belief that everyone deserves a home.
