Today, September 1, 2023, all students in Texas colleges and children in shelters, treatment centers, group homes and on all college campuses are safer. That’s due to two new Texas laws, HB 3553 and 3554. Thanks to anti-trafficking leader Jacquelyn Aluotto, founder of NTZ Inc, The Survivor Leaders who fought for this, Representative Shawn Thierry who sponsored the bills, Senator John Whitmire who carried the bills in the Texas Senate, all bipartisan supporters who voted “Yes!” Ultimately, Governor Abbott believed and signed the bills into law.

Black Mothers in Texas Will Suffer Due to Republican Civil War

Today, the singular bill in the Texas House addressing the alarming mortality rate of Black women giving birth was prevented from being voted on due to a tactical maneuver used by a conservative wing of the Republican Party. Rep. Thierry Selected to Serve on Steering Committee for Texas Maternal Mortality as Her Bill Passes Unanimously Out of Public Health Committee

House Bill 2403 will direct the Texas Maternal Mortality and Morbidity Task Force to investigate the causes of why African American women die at three times the rate as other women during or shortly after childbirth. Authored by Representative Thierry (D-Houston), the bill was passed unanimously out of the House Committee on Public Health and has the endorsement of health organizations including the American Heart Association, March of Dimes, Texas Pediatric Society, the Afiya Center, and the Texas Medical Association.
