State Rep. Suleman Lalani On Pending Bills in the Texas State Legislature
State Representative Suleman Lalani gives his opinion on the bill in front of the state Senate. He is the one of the first Muslim Americans to be elected into the Texas House. Representative Lalani is Pakistani American and has been a physician in private practice for the past twenty years. He is the representative for District 76 that encompasses part of Fort Bend County which include the cities of Sugar Land, Stafford, Richmond & Meadows Place. Healthcare and public health legislation are his major priorities.
State Rep. Gene Wu On Pending Bills in the Texas State Legislature
State Representative Gene Wu serves the people of District 137 which encompasses parts of Southwest Houston. Prior to being elected in 2012, he served as a prosecutor in the Harris County District Attorney’s Office, where he sought justice for thousands of crime victims. Gene is currently an attorney in private practice where he often represents minors in court in either criminal or CPS cases. Since being elected, he has maintained a focus on improving the lives of children in Texas. Wu is also Chinese American and grew up in the Sharpstown neighborhood in Southwest Houston.
Mayor Turner gives his remarks on the TEA taking over HISD
Mayor Turner shares his thoughts on TEA taking over HISD. Under the current superintendent and new school board, there has been significant progress made in HISD. Forty of 50 former D or F schools are in a much better status today. “This takeover is not about the quality of education. If you look at the Texas Legislature, several bills have been filed to pre-empt the authority of the city of Houston and other local jurisdictions. HISD happens to be one of those local jurisdictions. You cannot run school districts, cities, and counties from Austin, Texas. You tell me how this benefits the kids? Instead of grading the students and the teachers, the Texas Education Agency needs to grade themselves on how they are handling this matter. I give them an F." - Mayor Turner
