Houston Hackathon Winners Bring Forth Innovative Solutions
Hackathon winners focused on monitoring air quality, improving storm drainage and connecting library resources during the fifth annual event. The City of Houston hosted a 24 hour "Hackathon" on May 20-21 at the Houston Technology Center in partnership with Sketch City, a nonprofit community that advocates for civic technology and open data. More than 300 people including software developers, designers, and data analysts attended the event. Houston’s “civic hackers” pitched ideas, formed teams, and developed innovative new websites, mobile apps, and insightful data visualizations to address community and City problems.

Grant Applications Now Open for Local Artists and Cultural Nonprofits In Need of Disaster Relief from Harvey Arts Recovery Fund
the Harvey Arts Recovery Fund (HARF), which supports Houston artists, performers, musicians and arts and culture organizations in need of disaster assistance. The second round of grant awards will be distributed this spring and the application is open from Feb. 15 to March 1, 2018 at www.harveyartsrecovery.org. In January, HARF awarded more than $40,000 to local artists and arts, heritage and cultural organizations who suffered personal and professional losses due to Hurricane Harvey.

Comcast RISE to Award an Additional $1 Million in Grants to Minority-Owned Small Businesses in Houston
100 small businesses owned by people of color will each receive a $10,000 grant
Comcast will again award $1 million to small businesses owned by people of color, including Black, Indigenous, Hispanic, and Asian American owners, among others, in Houston. This effort is part of the Comcast RISE Investment Fund program, a multi-year, multi-faceted initiative launched in late 2020 to support small businesses owned by people of color (POC) and provide the resources and tools they need today.
Governor Abbott, TDEM Announce Expansion of COVID-19 Antibody Infusion Center In Seguin
Governor Greg Abbott today announced that the Texas Division of Emergency Management (TDEM), in partnership with local officials, will expand operations at an active COVID-19 therapeutic infusion center in Seguin. The infusion center, which opened on a small scale in December 2020 and transitioned to a larger operation, will further grow operations starting tomorrow. The expansion is expected to double the number of daily infusions from 25-30 to approximately 50.
