Philadelphia Museum of Art Acquires Quilts, Sculptures, and Other Works by African American Artists from the South
The Philadelphia Museum of Art has acquired a significant group of works by self-taught African American artists, deepening the museum’s already rich holdings of so-called outsider artists and strengthening its overall collection of art by American people of color. The 24 works include three major assemblages by Thornton Dial, an iron and steel worker, pipe fitter, carpenter, and house painter who lived in Bessemer, Ala., near Birmingham.

Houston First invites the public to join us for Saturday Night Movies on the Plaza at Avenida Houston (in front of Hall C at the George R. Brown Convention Center). Beginning Saturday, February 8, and continuing through the end of the month, the Plaza at Avenida Houston will present outdoor screenings of movies written, directed or featuring prominent African Americans. Screenings will be followed by a Q&A with Houston creatives and others discussing the relevance of the films to black history and America’s broad cultural heritage.

The George Floyd Justice in Policing Act reimagines policing for the 21st Century by banning chokeholds, stopping no-knock warrants, combatting racial profiling, eliminating qualified immunity, and mandating data collection, including body cameras and dashboard cameras. This program ended with guest lecturers, super producer Dallas Austin and recording artist Sir The Baptist, they both received honorary doctorates in music from TSU on May 6. The last class was held at the National Museum of African American Music and to their surprise, each student received a gold plaque from the RIAA.

Twenty-eight aspiring community leaders from neighborhoods throughout the city received certificates of course completion at a graduation ceremony held on May 3, 2023, at City Hall. The program featured a keynote address by Mayor Sylvester Turner and remarks by Shannon Buggs, Director of the Mayor's Office of Complete Communities, and TaKasha Francis, DON Director.
