Google Cloud and the Alfred Street Baptist Church have partnered for the second time for the 20th Annual ASBC Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) Festival, taking place virtually on October 7, 4:00pm-8:00pm and virtually and in person at the University of the District of Columbia on October 8, 10:00am-2:00pm.

I just moved to a new area of town and my play-sister Holly from Barbados wanted to take me to lunch. All she said was, “I really want Indian food.” I don’t run but I will sprint for Indian food. The reason why her nationality is important is that I am reminded of the history of Indians in the Caribbean Islands and the story of how cultures and cuisines collide. The recent death of a New York homeless person, Jordan Neely, is not merely a reflection of two individuals caught in a Shakespearian tragedy - one, the victim, Mr. Neely and the other, Daniel Penny, the perpetrator of the crime. Rather, this incident is a microcosmic reflection of many White Americans’ view of Black lives. The “Black Lives Matter” slogan was prompted by the realization that George Floyd’s horrific death by a White policeman was a stark representation of many Americans subconscious lack of value for the life of a Black American.

More than 400 UHD alumni and friends of the University gathered in the Houston Marriott Marquis ballroom on Tuesday, October 3, 2023, in celebration and support of Houston’s second largest university. Now in its second year, the annual Alumni & Friends Celebration Dinner benefits the University’s Compass Points Fund in support of student success. In anticipation of UHD’s 50th anniversary year, two check presentations of $50,000 each—one from steadfast supporter Marilyn Davies and the other from T Mobile were made, bolstering the total funds raised to more than $300,000.

Naked Wines Launches Opportunity Fund for Latinos in Wine
The new grant program will help support this underrepresented community via $80,000 in grants
Naked Wines, the largest 100% direct-to-consumer winery in America, today announced the Montoya Opportunity Fund to help empower the next generation of Latino winemaking talent. Driven by winemaker Macario Montoya, the grant program is a commitment to promoting diversity and inclusion in an industry where Latino professionals are vastly underrepresented. In California, Latinos make up only 1% of wine producers in the state and this fund is an effort to grow this number. The program, which is being overseen by Naked Wines with Montoya serving as lead advisor, is open for applications September 15 through October 31, 2023.
