In commemoration of Harriet Tubman Day on March 10, internationally renowned actress, Gwendolyn Briley-Strand, brought Harriet Tubman to the Halls of Congress, and she brought some passengers with her. Local 1-2 of Utility Workers Union of America, AFL-CIO, Worcester County NAACP Branch, and HR 1242 Resilience Project were present to encourage Congress to introduce legislation to rename Virginia Inside Passage to the Harriet Tubman Waterway.

The creative works of 70 teen writers and artists from 13 Harris County school districts and 10 private schools were recognized this month during the 98th annual National Scholastic Art & Writing Awards 2021, judged in New York City. Seventy-five national medals and five scholarships were awarded to the area youth who earned regional Gold Key Awards earlier this year during a competition sponsored by Harris County Department of Education.

Black Employee Accuses Fuddruckers of Discrimination
A black Harris County man is suing the restaurant chain Fuddruckers, alleging discrimination and wrongful termination. Lloyd Mitchell filed a complaint June 30 in the Houston Division of the Southern District of Texas against Luby’s Fuddruckers Restaurants, alleging violation of Title VII of the 1964 Civil Rights Act.
Lost African-American Cemeteries Located In San Antonio
Two lost local cemeteries are no longer missing, thanks to Everett Fly, a nationally renowned expert on African-American landmarks. Based on oral interviews with descendants and extensive archival research from Bexar County to Austin, Fly was able to locate the cemeteries in Northeast San Antonio.
