A recent report, Driven by Debt: Houston, estimated that not only does this program impact hundreds of thousands of drivers in the Greater Houston area, but that those impacted are disproportionately Black and low-income residents.

Harris County Files Amicas Brief With Texas Supreme Court Opposing Sovereign Immunity For ERCOT

Prolonged Blackouts Caused The Deaths of Nearly 80 Texans

Today, the Harris County Attorney’s Office (HCAO) filed an amicus (friend of the court) brief with the Texas Supreme Court opposing the Electricity Reliability Cooperative of Texas’s (ERCOT) argument that it is en- titled to governmental immunity (which would bar most people from suing ER- COT). The brief warns were the court to grant the ERCOT immunity, ERCOT could use that ruling to oppose lawsuits by residents in the wake of Winter Storm Uri and the collapse of the energy grid.

The floodwaters have receded, but life is far from normal in many parts of Houston. At the Houston Food Bank, the warehouse has been operating around the clock to help those impacted by the storm. More than 19 million pounds of food has left the warehouse in the last month. That’s three times the normal monthly distribution rate. “There is incredible need out there and we do not see it slowing down any time soon,” said Greene. “Recovery will not be fast for many in our community who are, literally, starting over with nothing. We are committed to being there to help for the long haul.”
