Fresh Spirit Wellness for Women, a Houston-based nonprofit which provides support to women who are victims of domestic violence and sexual abuse, will be hosting its 20th Anniversary Celebration event on this Saturday, October 13th, 2018. October is recognized nationally as Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
Actress and former TV star Charnele Brown, who is best-known for her role as Kimberly Reese in ‘A Different World’, and Houston-based Comedian Ku Egenti will serve as Co-MCs for the event. The centerpiece of the Legacy Awards will be the stage play ‘He Loves Me Not’, written and directed by playwright Mona Moore. Gospel Singer Sherri Jones-Moffett will have a cameo appearance in the play.
“We are looking forward to the tremendous event as we have been in previous years,” said Fresh Spirit Wellness for Women CEO, Director, and Founder Dr. Conte Terrell. “Last year there more than 20,000 incidents of domestic violence in the Houston area in the first ten months of 2017, and we must continue our efforts to raise awareness to this serious issue and help provide solutions moving forward.”
Figures from the Texas Department of Public Safety show more than 214,000 wives, husbands, girlfriends and others were injured or died in 2016 at the hands of a family member. The statistics show that's an increase from about 193,000 in 2011.
Since 1997, the Legacy Awards has honored victims of domestic violence for their courage, resilience, and determination to break the cycle of violence that can shatter families and communities. Fresh Spirit Wellness for Women’s goal is to increase the public`s awareness of domestic violence, sexual abuse and the various problems and effects of abuse regardless of economic and sociological backgrounds.
“I am very much looking forward to this 20th Anniversary celebration, and we are expecting Houstonians to come out and support our cause and efforts,” said Dr. Terrell.
