Students from the Aldine Independent School District will show off their innovative bus shelter designs to METRO as they compete for top honors in the bus shelter design project. The contest is intended to enhance the district's STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) Program. METRO welcomed the idea and assisted the instructors and students.
"METRO's planning department provided budget and construction parameters to challenge the students," said Roberto Treviño, executive vice president of planning, engineering, and construction. "In a corporate setting, you will always face constraints and giving the students real-world experience will ultimately boost their confidence and set them up for a brighter future."
This project started in the fall of 2018 with hundreds of student participants, but only eight teams made it to the final round. They researched and designed bus shelter prototypes using 3-D design software and 3-D printers. Each team submitted an analysis of its project, including a list of construction materials and an itemized budget.
The teams will present their bus shelter designs starting at 9 a.m., Tuesday, April 23 at the METRO Administration Building, 1900 Main St. The winner will be announced by METRO President & CEO Tom Lambert on May 4, 2019, at a school function where all the participants and their peers will be in attendance.
