Council Member Dwight Boykins Addresses City Council Vote on his Proposal to Fully Fund the Implementation of Pay Parity

Yesterday, I was the only member of City Council to vote for my proposed policy solution that would have created a permanent funding source to immediately and fully fund pay parity for firefighters as approved by the voters on November 6, 2018. My proposal would have also prevented the need for laying-off hundreds of city employees, threatening public safety, draining the city's fund balance, and possibly lowering the city bond rating and increasing the cost of property insurance for homeowners and businesses.
In the coming days I will reach out to city employees, my council colleagues and Houstonians broadly to see if we can identify any other fiscally responsible ideas to create a funding source for pay parity that secures our public safety and prevents the harmful impact of massive job losses.
Real leadership requires the willingness to do what's right even when it's not popular. This is what I did on Wednesday, and I will never shrink from standing up for what I believe in.
