KHOU, the TEGNA owned CBS affiliate and a leader in original and innovative storytelling received a 2019 Lone Star Emmy Awards nomination for their documentary “A Common Thread.” KHOU is the only Houston media outlet to receive a nomination in the Documentary – Cultural/Historical category. The documentary “A Common Thread” celebrates the 20th anniversary of the non-profit organization Dress for Success Houston.

Produced by KHOU 11 anchor Mia Gradney, “A Common Thread” tells the inspiring stories of three women (Latisa Brown, Karma Laico and Zeinab Kachmar Zahid) who found personal and professional success after overcoming adversity and tragedy. Each of the women credits Dress for Success Houston for having a positive impact on their lives.

Gradney is a longtime supporter and advocate of Dress for Success Houston and its mission of empowering women to achieve economic independence. She has volunteered with Dress for Success Houston since 2000 and currently serves on the non-profit’s Advisory Council. She co-founded Women of Wardrobe, the young professional’s branch of Dress for Success Houston and Gradney developed Speak for Success, a career educational program that helps broaden the oratory skills of clients of Dress for Success Houston.

“Through the years, as a volunteer at Dress for Success Houston, I have met some phenomenal women,” said Gradney. “I have seen the transformative change the organization, through its programs and services, can have on a woman. The journalist in me wanted to share those stories of inspiration while also celebrating the important mission of Dress for Success Houston.”

“A Common Thread” originally aired October 20th, 2018 on KHOU. The documentary can be viewed in its entirety at khou.com/ACommonThread.
