Texas Southern Men’s Basketball Team Begins NCAA Tournament Play Against Mount St. Mary

On Thursday, the NCAA will get back to some sort of normalcy as its First Four round of the 2021 Men’s basketball tournament begins and the opening game will feature one of two Houston schools to reach the “Big Dance.” Southwestern Athletic Conference Tournament Champions Texas Southern (16-8) will face Mount St. Mary’s (12-10) who also made it to the NCAA tournament by winning the Northeast Conference Tournament.

Mara Brock Akil & Salim Akil’s DC Comics Drama ‘Black Lightning’ Gets Pilot Pickup at CW

DC Comics drama “Black Lightning,” from executive producers Mara Brock Akil and husband/producing partner, Salim Akil (“Girlfriends,” “The Game,” “Being Mary Jane”) has moved from Fox to The CW with a formal pilot order, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Greg Berlanti, who produces several other DC properties for the CW (“Supergirl”, “The Flash”, “Arrow”) is also executive producing the project.

School districts desperate for substitute teachers as staffing levels fluctuate due to COVID

“Substitute teachers wanted.” That’s the message from some districts around the state as quarantines impact staffing levels. One of those districts is St. Michael-Albertville. Their superintendent Ann-Marie Foucault put a plea on Facebook hoping to find enough subs to keep her students in class.

Galveston Historical Foundation Becomes Steward of 1920 City National Bank Building

Galveston Historical Foundation (GHF) recently accepted one of Galveston Island’s most significant downtown buildings. The 1920 City National Bank Building, owned by Ross Moody, a trustee of The Moody Foundation and Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of the Board of National Western Life Group, was donated to GHF in June. Located in the Central Business District at 2219 Market, the City National Bank building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places (1984) and recognized as one of the city’s most important early 20th century buildings.

Texas Southern University Professor Receives Inaugural ACLS HBCU Faculty Fellowship

Texas Southern University (TSU) proudly announces the prestigious recognition bestowed upon Trushna Parekh, Associate Professor of Geography, who has been honored with a 2024 ACLS HBCU Faculty Fellowship from the American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS). This esteemed fellowship, part of the ACLS HBCU Faculty Fellowship and Grant Program, offers flexible support tailored to the research, teaching, and service commitments unique to Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). In its inaugural year, the program will provide assistance to 20 HBCU faculty scholars, empowering them to pursue exceptional research projects in the humanities and interpretive social sciences.
