Governor Abbott Appoints Five To Texas Commission on the Arts

Governor Greg Abbott has appointed Mary Ann Apap Heller and Karen Partee to the Texas Commission on the Arts for terms set to expire on August 31, 2019. Additionally, the Governor appointed Adrian Guerra and reappointed Dale Brock and Kevin Yu to the commission for terms set to expire on August 31, 2023. The commission fosters the development of a receptive climate for the arts that will culturally enrich and benefit state citizens in their daily lives and attract outstanding artist to become state residents.

Semi-trucks Filled with 1.2 Million Packages of Girl Scout Cookies Roll into Houston February 10

It’s the day Girl Scout cookie lovers have been waiting for. Girl Scout Cookies are rolling into southeast Texas beginning Saturday, February 10. From 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Sam Houston Race Park, hundreds of Girl Scout volunteers will be unloading more than 1.2 million packages of Girl Scout Cookies from dozens of semi-trucks that will line the event park. The cookies will be delivered to customers in the following days by Girl Scouts who took pre-orders in January.

Philadelphia Museum of Art Acquires Quilts, Sculptures, and Other Works by African American Artists from the South

The Philadelphia Museum of Art has acquired a significant group of works by self-taught African American artists, deepening the museum’s already rich holdings of so-called outsider artists and strengthening its overall collection of art by American people of color. The 24 works include three major assemblages by Thornton Dial, an iron and steel worker, pipe fitter, carpenter, and house painter who lived in Bessemer, Ala., near Birmingham.
