The White House Initiative on Advancing Educational Equity, Excellence, and Economic Opportunity through Historically Black Colleges and Universities announces its ninth cohort of HBCU Scholars, recognizing 102 undergraduate, graduate, and professional students from 29 different states and countries for their accomplishments in academics, leadership, civic engagement and much more. The 2023 HBCU scholars are the largest cohort since the inception of this recognition program in 2014 and represent a record number of institutions, with the HBCU participation rate now over 70 percent.
Biden Administration Announces Executive Order To Close Educational Gap And Bring Equity For Black Americans
President Joe Biden signed an Executive Order on Tuesday (Oct. 19) that seeks to begin the necessary work to address and eliminate the racial disparities in U.S. education and, as a result, provide economic opportunity. The administration has directed a working group made up of senior officers across government agencies to study and to implement best practices that will improve education and ultimately financial outcomes for Black Americans.

New Artwork Illuminates Houston’s Past with Multisensory Experience
The Bagby Street passage under Bayou Place, between Capitol Street and Texas Avenue, is now home to the newest addition to the City’s Art Collection. The Houston Oracle in Two Parts by sculptor Stephen Korns honors the city’s history while also improving the pedestrian experience in the Theater District. Korns used photographs, video, sound, reclaimed materials and special lighting to turn the underpass into a multimedia work of art. Like the artist’s signature Lunar Lighting project along Buffalo Bayou, the lighting for this new artwork changes nightly with the lunar cycle.
