In a significant victory for Houstonians with homes damaged during Harvey, Mayor Sylvester Turner today announced that the City of Houston won a temporary injunction to stop the Texas General Land Office and GLO Commissioner George P. Bush from removing over $1.2 billion in Hurricane Harvey disaster relief from the City.

City, state and Texas Medical Center (TMC) leaders convened this afternoon to announce the creation of TMC3, a new, multi-institutional translational research campus slated to break ground next year, with projected completion in 2022. The ambitious project will bring together the best institutions and brightest minds in clinical care, research and industry. A third-party impact study also predicted that TMC3will drive $5.2 billion into the Houston economy and create nearly 30,000 jobs.

In 2018, the discovery of an unmarked burial ground at the former Imperial State Prison Farm site in Sugar Land drew national attention to an abhorrent chapter in history. Archaeologists at the site found the skeletal remains of 95 victims of the convict leasing system, which was used after the Civil War to replicate the oppression that existed under slavery. Although the 13th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution prohibited involuntary servitude, it created an exemption for people convicted of crimes. Southern states, including Texas, took advantage by enacting "Black Codes," laws that applied only to African Americans, who could be prosecuted criminally for such offenses as loitering, breaking curfew, or not carrying proof of employment.

HOUSTON - Mayor Sylvester Turner announced Friday the Houston Pay it Forward Donation Drive has collected enough hurricane recovery supplies to fill more than two, 18-wheelers. The trucks are on their way to northern Florida and other areas devastated by Hurricane Michael to deliver cleaning supplies, non-perishable food items, children and adult shoes and clothing, bottled water, diapers, and pet supplies.

Houston Furniture Bank has been awarded a $1.5 million grant from the Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund administered by the Greater Houston Community Foundation to provide essential furniture to families affected by the storm. The grant will make it possible for Houston Furniture Bank to provide furniture to 2,000 families to help them recover, expanding the nonprofit’s ongoing efforts to ensure that no child has to eat or sleep on the floor.

City Schedules the Cleaning of Two Homeless Encampments This Week
A citywide group of employees and environmental contractors will be out in full force deep cleaning two homeless encampments this week, which have more than doubled since August, when a temporary restraining order was put in place to block the city’s anti-encampment ordinance. Members of the city representing health, general services, police, fire, and the Mayor’s Office will first visit the encampments and offer to store all personal possessions, before the cleanup takes place.
