The Houston Chapter of Jack and Jill of America, Incorporated presented 31 outstanding debutantes and seven stags to society at its 29th Biennial Debutante Ball at the Hilton Americas — Houston on Sunday, January 1, 2017. The president of the Houston Chapter is Mrs. Lisa Harris. Ms. Connie L. Cochran served as chairman and Mrs. Annette Bracey, Mrs. Erica Craven Fazande, Dr. Jocelyn Greely, and Ms. Colette Loeb served as co-chairmen. Melinda Spaulding, news anchor for KRIV Fox 26, and Dr. Austin Lane, president of Texas Southern University served as masters of ceremony. As each debutante was introduced to society, she was promenaded around the dance floor where she thanked her mother with a long stemmed red rose before performing sophisticated waltzes with her escort and father. Each stag was escorted by his mother as he was presented.

Lexus Releases Extended Version of Super Bowl Spot with Marvel Studios’ “Black Panther”
As announced earlier this month, Lexus will once again be participating in advertising's biggest day of the year with a commercial in Super Bowl LII on Sunday, Feb. 4. Today, the brand has released a 60-second extended digital version of the ad, which was created in partnership with Marvel Studios' highly anticipated film "Black Panther," opening in U.S. theaters Feb. 16. The spot, "Long Live the King," pairs the flagship luxury performance sedan 2018 Lexus LS 500 F SPORT with the Black Panther, played by Chadwick Boseman, and can be viewed here. A 30-second version of the ad will air during the third quarter of the Super Bowl.

Pulitzer Prize-winning composer, pianist and educator George Walker has died at the age of 96. Walker’s death was announced to NPR by one of his family members, Karen Schaefer, who said he died Thursday at Mountainside Hospital in Montclair, N.J. after a fall.

Between September 4 and 7, 2018, Brett Kavanaugh, President Trump’s nominee to the Supreme Court of the United States, will face a barrage of questioning before the Senate. Kavanaugh is a 12-year veteran of the Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit, and was nominated to fill the vacancy left by Anthony Kennedy’s retirement. Kennedy, widely regarded as the Court’s “swing vote”, was often the deciding factor on whether the Court’s rulings were more favorable to conservative or liberal factions. By nominating the 53-year old Kavanaugh, President Trump has the opportunity to replace Kennedy with a young, reliably conservative justice, setting the stage for a ferocious confirmation hearing before the U.S. Senate.

Tuskegee University recognizes 47 New Doctors of Veterinary Medicine during 2022 spring commencement and admittance into veterinary medical profession during oath ceremony
The Tuskegee University College of Veterinary Medicine (TUCVM) Class of 2022 had 47 new doctors of veterinary medicine recognized on April 30. Tuskegee University held its in-person Spring Commencement Graduate and Professional Schools Ceremony at the General “Chappie” James Center followed by the college’s in-person Veterinary Medicine Oath and Hooding Ceremony at the university’s Chapel. Thirty of the 47 students graduated with honors. They included four “Summa Cum Laude,” eight “Magna Cum Laude” and 18 “Cum Laude.” Both ceremonies were live-streamed for those not in attendance to view and are also available on the university’s YouTube channel for anyone who missed them to view later.
Over 600 students set to receive degrees at PVAMU’s 26th Fall Commencement Convocation
The sky is the limit for 642 students who will soon walk across the stage at PVAMU’s 26th Fall Commencement Convocation this Saturday, which features award-winning actress, playwright, and scholar Anna Deavere Smith as speaker. This number of graduating students includes seven doctoral, 113 master’s and 522 bachelor’s candidates, which will bring PVAMU’s total alumni count to 79,205 Proud and Productive Panthers.
