An Inspiring Biography of Merze Tate From Penn Professor Barbara Savage
Born in rural Michigan at the turn of the century, Merze Tate was the first African-American woman to attend Oxford. She also graduated with a doctorate from Harvard, became a leading scholar on diplomatic history, colonialism, and nuclear arms, taught for 30-plus years at Howard, and kept seeking ever more knowledge throughout her life—reading, writing, and traveling the world with her camera. University of Pennsylvania professor Barbara Savage’s new biography MERZE TATE: THE GLOBAL ODYSSEY OF A BLACK WOMAN SCHOLAR (Yale University Press; November 2023) tells the astonishing story of a woman, who, despite living in what she called a “sex and race discriminating world,” never allowed her intellectual ambitions to be thwarted.

Summer is nice, but fall is better — for travel
Sure, an escape to the beach or cooler mountain air or the arctic air-conditioning of a museum comes not a moment too soon when summer really starts to heat up.
Council Member Dave Martin's District E Newsletter - July 2017
As we head further into summer, my City Council colleagues and I continue to fight for district projects in the City of Houston's Capital Improvement Plan (CIP). Since being sworn into office, I continue to see, year after year, the amount of tax dollars for CIP projects allocated inequitably across the 11 council districts. This year's proposed plan, which was given to city council members late last week, shows a total of 7% of all CIP dollars going towards District E, doubling the amount of CIP dollars we received last year. Last year District E only received 3% of the total CIP dollars distributed among Council Districts.

After Hurricane Maria toppled the bridge that connects him to the rest of civilization and ripped the roof and walls off his house here in the central mountains of Puerto Rico, Ramón Sostre raised a weathered American flag above the wreckage.

Council Member Dave Martin's District E Newsletter - May 2017
The City of Houston is currently awaiting the final word from the 85th Texas Legislature on key pension legislation. The passage of Senate Bill 2190 and House Bill 43 are critical to the City of Houston's Fiscal Year 2018 Budget. The passage of these two pieces of legislation allows the City of Houston to avoid a $240 million budget shortfall that would lead to layoffs for city employees. I am dedicated to making sure the City of Houston's budget is balanced, services are not cut, and I will fight for District E residents.
