The family of Eugene Ethridge Jr., 33, filed a federal civil rights lawsuit Tuesday against the Fort Bend County jail (lawsuit attached). The Fort Bend County jail has an atrocious record of failing to prevent suicide of inmates. September 29, 2015 Fort Bend County jail inmate Heriberto Correas committed suicide by hanging. The Texas Commission on Jail Standards (TCJS) investigated and wrote a letter directly to Fort Bend County Sheriff Troy Nehls.

Menefee announced that the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) will investigate the Texas Commission on Environment Quality (TCEQ)’s concrete batch permitting criteria and processes under federal civil rights laws. The EPA initiated the investigation in response to complaints submitted by the Harris County Attorney’s Office and Lone Star Legal Aid under Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

New Harris County Program Helps Struggling Families With Financial Instability

Harris County officials recently introduced a groundbreaking pilot program called "Uplift Harris" aimed at assisting low-income residents facing financial instability. This initiative, funded through the federal American Rescue Plan Act, will provide eligible individuals with a monthly stipend of $500 for up to 18 months. With an allocated budget of $20.5 million, the program will be overseen by the Harris County Public Health Department. If approved by Harris County Commissioners, this program will make Harris County the first in Texas to implement such an initiative, joining the ranks of other major metropolitan areas.
